Description

Prompt is the terminal that goes where you do, whether you're on the road or at your desk. With Panic Sync, your servers are available on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. And with Mosh and Eternal Terminal support, you can stay connected even on the most unstable networks. Welcome to Prompt 3. For over a decade, Prompt has been the best SSH terminal on iOS and iPadOS, and we're excited to finally release a much-requested Mac version. But that's not all. With two new connection types, port forwarding, and a faster terminal, Prompt is better than ever. • Superfast SSH We retooled the text engine in Prompt 3 to be up to 10x faster, and with improved terminal emulation, you can run nvim inside tmux without breaking a sweat. • Clips Put your most-used commands and text bits into clips and access them with a single tap via Prompt’s keyboard bar. Clips can be stored globally or per-server. • Secure Enclave Authenticate with FaceID and TouchID. The keys will stay secure on your device. • Panic Sync Sync your favorite servers, passwords, private keys, and clips, between Prompt on all of your iOS devices. • Customizable Make Prompt perfect with new themes, fonts, and a very configurable iOS keyboard. • Jump Hosts and Agent Forwarding Access corporate servers, even at the beach. • Mosh and Eternal Terminal Keep your terminal open, even when you get disconnected. Mosh is optimized for high-latency, low-throughput networks. Eternal Terminal is great for when you need to keep your full terminal history on a flaky connection. • Mouse Support Use your mouse to interact with TUI-based apps that run through the terminal. AND YES, A DARK ICON. What more can we say? TAKE CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE, NOW INCLUDING YOUR MAC. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY PROMPT 3.

  • Bad UX = Bad UI

It's just not a good usage experience. Clip syncing does not work well. Panic Apps worked better with iCloud Sync. Panic Sync is unreliable. Today I updated and ALL my clips and clip groups were literally just wiped away. I would prefer a manual way to backup my clips and clip groups rather than panic sync which destroys data. I've asked for some feature updates for several months. They are not interested in providing users what they need, instead they have this app that is what they want to give. And it simply does not work well compared to other terminal applications. UPDATE: I am increasing my rating from 2 to 3. I was contacted by support who inofrmed me how to retrieve my syned clips that had disappeared. So that was nice to not have lost all those. I still want an improved interface as previously requeted. As the interface improves I will continue to increase my rating.
  • Fake “Free” app, subscription based

Completely paid app, doesn't even let you add one server if you don't subscribe (or purchase the “lifetime” license)
  • Removed access to Prompt 2

I purchased Prompt 2 and can no longer download it. Panic will never get any of my money in the future due to this stunt.
  • Great admin tool

Great tool both for the iPad and iPhone. I would highly recommend to anyone doing system administration tasks. Responsive and thorough support from a stalwart Apple platform developer.
  • Pretty Good, but could be better

I would like to see: 1. Shortcuts on MacOS - The shortcuts are great on iOS, but missing on MacOS. Maybe the expectation is to use the default shell option to remotely run commands? 2. I cannot click in the middle of a long string of a command and get the cursor there, or select portions of the string to easily replace it. A free competitor's shell can do this. 3. Ability to have a local shell in the list of "Servers" to conect to. 4. Ability to create a "Server" that will run a clip upon connecting. Use case: A Remote MacOS Server that is running Parallels Desktop. Parallels has a linux VM Called "Docker" I could define a system called "Docker" that would SSH to the MacOS target and do prlctl enter "Docker" and it would seems like like I have a dedicated session, but without the need to install SSH keys on the target VM. 5. The ability to export clips for backup or even version control would be nice.

Wasn’t able to get a reply to a couple of support requests in the last two weeks.
  • Crazy expensive, no love for existing customers

I own a perpetual license for Prompt 2. Apparently you want $100 from me now? Haha. Prompt 2 works fine for now, and I’ll search for reasonably priced alternatives.
  • Crashes constantly

Save server? Crashes. Paste key? Crashes. Use most features? Crashes.

Not long after paying for "Prompt 2" which was marketed as a perpetual license with upgrades, it developed a severe, app-breaking bug where the terminal display would get vertically out of 'sync' with the character data. Prompt support indicated that this bug would be fixed in a future version. Turns out the future version was Prompt 3, a paid upgrade and VERY expensive. So the app basically never worked for me an now I have to pay again to fix it? Very well: you have successfully swindled me. But you won't do it a second time. I would attempt to get a refund but months have passed and its too late now.
  • Quits immediately when connected to external monitor

Works on ipad screen, will not open from external monitor. If moved to the external monitor, quits/crashes/disappears from screen on connection attempt.
